The Fix-it Time of Year

Our first blizzard and do we really want to work in the garden today?  We think not!  There is still clean-up out there but it can wait until a less blustery day.  So it is time to get the front door fixed while we have a break.  Ken tore the frame off of the door that Gramps put in when we were building the house.  That was probably in the fall of 1980, thank you Gramps.  Ken is frugal like his dad and the true-cut 2 x 6 boards and spiral nails that Gramps installed that day did not want to come out today.  He did get it tore out and hung a blanket over the outside hole to keep some heat in. We took a break for lunch and were surprised when the outside dog, Titus was standing with his head under the edge of the blanket inside the frame of the doorway.

The snow came down fast and we had 3 – 4 inches before lunch.  It seems a little early in the year to get such a good covering for the soil but it never hurts to have a little more moisture.  The ground is not frozen yet and so it will all seep into the ground and not flow away.  The Cherry tree had so much on the limbs that the branches were hanging down low.  I took a photo of our market truck on the way to the mailbox.  The truck looked forlorn after having all that good corn, melons, tomatoes and other produce in it just three weeks ago.

And walking back with the mail I got a close up look at the snow when my feet slipped out from under me and smack I fell down on my backside; the good news was the mail and the camera were on the top side and nice and dry. 🙁

The snow is pretty though, and as Gramps used to say lying on his back as he put chains on the tractor tires, “Pretty cold, Pretty wet, Pretty nasty, Pretty muddy dripping in my eyes…”
